"Welcome Autumn!"

Greetings, Scott! portrait

Today is the Autumnal Equinox, the first day of Autumn.

If you were standing on Earth's equator today, the sun would appear directly over your head.  Earth has 2 equinoxes each year, days when daylight and darkness hours are approximately equal.

As we welcome Autumn, we also welcome some major changes in the landscape of PC technology.  A new version of Windows, called Windows 7, is scheduled to be released next month.  Read more about it below.

Additionally, there is a new version of Internet Explorer (IE 8).  It is being sent out by Microsoft as an "Important Update."   This affects all Windows XP and Vista users who use Internet Explorer to browse the Internet.  There is a link below to my website where you can read my summary about IE8.  I recommend that you get the free upgrade to IE8 ASAP!

The Website Spotlite is on www.PattonMyhre.com, check it out below.

Internet Explorer has been around for 14 years, read below to find a brief history of IE since 1995.

We still have a few months to reach our goals for 2009.  If your PC is hindering you instead of helping you, contact me for some FREE PC advice!

The Internet is a wonderful and dangerous place -

everyone using IE should upgrade to version 8!

We use programs called web browsers to view web pages from the Internet.  The web browser reads the contents of a web page and displays it on your PC screen.  The most popular web browser is the one that is included with Windows, it is called Internet Explorer (IE).

As Internet dangers evolve, we must change our protection to match these threats.  Your anti-virus program cannot protect your PC from all of the threats that can come from the Internet.  Your browser must prevent these dangers from coming into your PC from the Internet.  So, we have to continually upgrade our browsers to get newer and more sofisticated PC protection.

Microsoft has released the newest version of their web browser called Internet Explorer 8 (IE8).  It is being sent out automatically to all XP and Vista PC's as an "Important Update".  If your PC is configured to install updates automatically, you might already have installed IE8.

Everyone should upgrade to IE8!  Besides better PC protection, IE8 contains many new useful features that make the wonderful world wide web even better.

Look Out!  Windows 7 will be released next month!

Windows 7 will be released to the public next month.  Sounds like a wild animal coming out of it's cage, right?  Well, don't be afraid.  Despite getting a bad rap from the public, Windows Vista was by far the safest and most stable version of Windows yet, and Windows 7 will build on that legacy.

Many people who bought Vista were disaapointed to find out that they couldn't use their old printers, scanners, cameras or old software with it.  We were told this ahead of time, but it still rubbed people the wrong way.

If you buy a new PC after the release date, you will be getting Windows 7.  You can upgrade your existing XP or Vista to Windows 7, if you want the added security that Windows 7 offers.  It is reported to be faster than Vista, but not as fast as XP.  For this reason I don't recommend installing Windows 7 on an older PC.

PC protection is of equal importance to PC performance.  Windows 7 will have the best PC protection to date.  One of the chronic complaints about Vista was the numerous pop-ups that ask your permission to make changes to settings.  These permission pop-ups have been greatly reduced in Windows 7.

The blessing and bane of Windows is the fact that hundreds of vendors make hardware and software for Windows, unlike the Apple Mac, where all hardware and software is made by Apple.  This plethora of products gives us many choices and many compatability problems.  Windows 7 should be more compatible with hardware and software than Vista, but not as compatible as XP.

Windows XP is 8 year old technology.  That doesn't mean it is technology for 8 year olds, but that it is outdated as far as today's technology is concerned.  As vendors update their PC products to work with Windows Vista and Windows 7, soon their new products will no longer be compatible with Windows XP.

Look out!  Here comes Windows 7!

Internet Explorer is the most popular program used to browse the World Wide Web.  It has been in use for 14 years!  Here is a timeline of each version of IE, from version 1 in 1995 to Version 8 in 2009.

Internet Explorer version 1 (IE1) - August 1995 - it was replaced 3 months later!

IE2 - November 1995

IE 3 - August 1996 - The Internet Explorer team consisted of roughly 100 people during the development of three months. The first major IE security hole, the Princeton Word Macro Virus Loophole, was discovered the same month in IE3.

IE4 - September 1997 - This version was also included with the new Windows 98.

IE5 - March 1999 - The IE team consisted of over 1,000 people in 1999, with funding on the order of $100 million per year.

IE6 - August 2001 - Released a few months before Windows XP.  This version survived the longest and was the first version used by most people as Internet use skyrocketed during this period.

IE7 - October 2006 - Featured tabbed browsing, a multiple-engine search box, a web feeds reader, and anti-phishing filter.  Included in Windows Vista, which was later released in Jan. 2007.

IE8 - March 2009 - Supported by Windows XP and Windows Vista.  It features Accelerators - which allow supported web applications to be invoked without explicitly navigating to them - and WebSlices - which allows portions of page to be subscribed to and monitored from a redesigned Favorites Bar. Other features include InPrivate privacy features, and a SmartScreen phishing filter.

As of May 2009, here are the percentages of PC browser usage:

Internet Explorer (IE) - 66%

Mozilla Firefox - 23%

Apple Safari, Netscape Navigator, Google Chrome and others - 11%
